Online Kenya Visa - Frequently Asked Questions

General and Basic Information

The Kenya eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is an online entry permit system launched in 2024 by the Kenyan government. Designed to streamline the travel process, it offers a simplified and user-friendly application experience. This pre-authorization is required for international visitors and is issued entirely online.

All eligible nationals must obtain a Kenya eTA before travelling to Kenya.

International travelers who meet the criteria below are exempt from obtaining a Kenya eTA.

  • Holders of a Kenyan passport or a one-way Emergency Certificate issued by Kenyan missions abroad
  • Individuals with a valid work permit or other official passes
  • Holders of a Kenya Permanent Residence Card
  • Citizens of East African Community (EAC) partner states - The EAC comprises the following states Tanzania, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.
  • Transit passengers who remain within the airport premises
  • Travelers arriving and departing on the same ship without disembarking

The Kenya eTA is valid for a single entry, allowing travelers to enter Kenya only once. It cannot be reused for re-entry after leaving the country. A new eTA must be obtained for each subsequent visit.

Currently, the nationals of following countries are exempted from getting a visa for Kenya and can instead apply for a Kenya eTA.

The Kenya eTA is designed for short-term visits, allowing travelers to stay in Kenya for up to 90 days from the date of entry. It is a single-entry permit, meaning it can be used to enter and exit the country only once.

The Kenya eTA is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. It allows a maximum stay of up to three months, and travelers cannot exceed this period. The permit is for single entry only.

All foreign nationals applying for a Kenya eTA must meet the following conditions:

  • Purpose of Visit: Travel must be for tourism, visiting friends or family, investment, or business activities only.
  • Length of Stay: The stay in Kenya must not exceed the permitted duration of 3 months (90 days) under the eTA.
  • Employment Restriction: Travelers are not allowed to engage in any form of employment, whether paid or unpaid.

To apply for a Kenya eTA, travelers must prepare the following:

  • Valid passport with at least one or two blank pages
  • Travel itinerary showing arrival and departure dates
  • Proof of accommodation (e.g., hotel booking or host invitation)
  • Recent color photograph
  • Round-trip or return ticket
  • Valid payment method (credit/debit card or approved online payment option) for the eTA fee

The standard processing time for a Kenya eTA application is 72 hours (approximately 3 business days). To avoid last-minute issues, travelers are advised to submit their application at least 4–5 days before departure.

In most cases, applications are processed within the stated timeframe. However, delays can occur due to factors such as:

  • Peak travel seasons
  • High application volumes
  • Errors or incomplete information in the application form

Applying early ensures you have enough time to address any unexpected delays.

Travelers who wish to stay in Kenya beyond their current eTA validity can apply for an extension at the Kenya Immigration Office. A valid reason must be provided, and the extension process must be completed before the existing eTA expires.

Applicants are required to:

  • Pay the applicable extension fee
  • Submit all necessary supporting documents along with the extension request

Travelers may not be required to carry a printed copy of their Kenya eTA, as it is electronically linked to their passport. However, keeping a print copy is recommended, as it may be useful in certain situations.

It is possible to reapply for a Kenya eTA immediately after a rejection. However, applicants should first review and identify the reason for the refusal to prevent another unsuccessful outcome. Once the issues have been resolved and all details are accurate, travelers may submit a new Kenya eTA application without delay.

Holders of a Kenya eTA are not permitted to work or take part in any work-related activities while in the country. To engage in any form of employment—whether paid or unpaid—travelers must obtain the appropriate Kenya work visa or permit. The Kenya eTA is strictly intended for short-term tourism and business purposes only.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is not required for all foreign travelers. However, travelers — including minors — arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission must present a valid vaccination certificate upon entry into Kenya.

Each international traveler must hold their own Kenya eTA when visiting the country. For minors, the application can be submitted on their behalf by an accompanying parent or legal guardian.
